March 13th - End of 2017 school year I tutor Ayan, an english language learner from Somalia. I help with her homework in all subjects. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday during my 6/7 study hall hour. 45 minutes each time. 20 hours in total.
Reflection: From this experience, I learned how to be patient and understanding when working with teenagers who don't know the English language. Tutoring Ayan has created a solid connection between me and her. The lessons I have taught her about English grammar in addition to the English words I have taught her has enhanced my teaching skills and even my English language skills. The best part of tutoring her was everyday when she said thank you with so much gratitude that I was moved. It was a humbling experience and has taught me that to really understand a language, one has to emerge themselves in it, which is what Ayan did. Her parents came here from Somalia for a better life and for more opportunities for their children. Ayan has taken all of it in stride and continues to work towards learning my culture while I continue to learn about her culture.
